Training for Dogs

The Canine Academy at Second Chance Center for Animals features classes created and taught by Certified Professional Dog Trainers. All classes rely on the use of positive reinforcement as the primary training method. Not only do you and your pet benefit from the expertise of our professional staff, but by training with Second Chance Center for Animals you are also supporting our mission to save more lives of animals without a home.
Training Course
This class is about providing puppies in their critical socialization period with an environment for quality, well supervised and safe socialization to sights, sounds, smells, textures, climbing, exploring, new humans and other dogs. Puppies will get to explore, greet others, play, learn their name and practice settling and relaxing while in an active space.

Puppies should be between 9 weeks and 5 months to start and be at least 7 days past their first round of puppy vaccines. Puppies showing signs of illness should not attend on that day (coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea). Purchase the 4-week program, begin any week. Client has 8 weeks to complete all 4 sessions. Puppy should not eat within 3 hours prior to class. Pet parents should bring a blanket or bed for Puppy to rest on, a favorite toy for chewing and lots of treats.

Weekly topics include potty training, avoiding separation anxiety, appropriate chew behaviors, and developing good habits. Puppy Socialization is a 4-week class and you can start on any session.

Bond With Your New Puppy
This class is designed to teach new puppy parents how to communicate effectively with their newest family member. Many puppies have some manners and skills coming into the new family, but puppies and their people must learn a common language. This class will teach basic obedience as well as crucial canine body language so that pets and their people can communicate effectively. This class is not meant for social interactions between puppies; rather it is meant to learn obedience skills, and focus on owners when in the presence of other puppies. There will be little to no social interactions in this class.

Week 1: Reward markers, focus, sit. Week 2: Loose leash skills, recall, settling. Week 3: Down, leave it, settling. Week 4: Stay, drop it, settling. Week 5: Building on behaviors, stay, recall, drop it, leave it, settling. Week 6: Building on behaviors, final “exam,” graduation, diploma and photos.

Puppies aged 10 weeks to 5 months are encouraged to participate in this class. They must be at least 7 days past their first round of puppy vaccines. Puppies must be spayed/neutered to attend this class.

This class is six consecutive weeks. Pet parents should bring a blanket or bed for the puppy to rest on in class, a favorite toy/chew and plenty of tasty treats. Puppies should not eat within the 3 hours prior to class. Any puppies showing signs of illness (coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea) should remain home on that day, but owners are invited to attend class and watch so they can keep up with lessons and homework.
